Rear Admiral Joanna M. Nunan, who is originally from Bridgeport, has been selected for the position at the academy located on Long Island, in Kings Point.
Nunan graduated from the New London, Connecticut-based Coast Guard Academy in 1987 and also received her master's degree in Business Administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic, according to a report by Safety4Sea.
She has previously served as the Coast Guard's Deputy for Personnel Readiness, overseeing the recruitment and training of all active duty, reserve, and civilian personnel, served on the Coast Guard Academy's Board of Trustees, and as the Assistant Commandant for Human Resources, helping to increase the retention of women in the Coast Guard, according to Safety4Sea.
"Rear Admiral Joanna Nunan is the right leader at the right time for the US Merchant Marine Academy," said US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, the outlet reported.
